1.  An ad in the newspaper is a bad sign.  Reputable breeders take reservations long before their litter is born and do not have to advertise in the local paper.

2.  Make sure the breeder is an AWC (American Whippet Club member) This can easily be confirmed and make sure you do so to see if their record is good.  Get references and check them out!

3.  Visit several breeders and check out the environment. Resist buying from anyone that has a bad situation just to "save" the puppy or adult.  That is how they make money.

4.  Get on waiting lists of reputable breeders that are planning litters, leave a deposit and keep in touch.  Make sure you get a full health guarantee and contract should your dog or puppy not work out.  Parents of litters should have the appropriate certifications and health screenings done.

5.  Research.  Get a copy of the pedigree and ask some AWC breeders their opinions about health or temperament problems that they may be aware of.  Also have the puppy or adult evaluated by other reputable breeders before you make a final decision.

6.  Take your time.  Whippets live a long time. You deserve a healthy, well bred and well socialized Whippet that will enhance your life.
